What is the difference between a public and private ip address

It wouldn't make sense to assign a static IP address to every user when they weren't connected often enough to use them. Public IP addresses are also called global or external IPs; these all refer to the same term. A private IP address is an address that's only used for devices inside your home network.

These addresses aren't reachable by other devices on the internet that are outside your home. Instead, they're used for devices to talk to each other, and so your router knows where to send incoming information.

The private IP addresses used in one home network are also used on thousands of other networks. For example, your phone might have the IP address That address is not unique—there are likely people in your neighborhood with the same private IP address for one of their devices. But these don't clash, because they are on separate networks. If you ever do have two of the same IP addresses on one private network, you'll end up with an IP conflict.

These all have the same meaning. For an analogy on how public and private IP addresses work, think about a college campus with student mailboxes. If you lived on campus and wanted to send a letter to the owner of box , you could simply write "Box " on the envelope and drop it into the campus mailbox. The mail staff would deliver it easily. However, if you lived off-campus and wanted to send a letter to box 's owner, you couldn't just write "Box " on an envelope and drop it off in a standard mailbox.

Each device within this network is assigned a different IP address in order to exchange files and share resources within the network. Although addresses must be unique within the private network, different private networks could all use the same addresses; since the computers in different networks don't directly communicate, it doesn't matter if they have the same address.

A device called a network router passes data back and forth among the connected computers using the private IP addresses as identifiers. The private network, or one of the computers in the network, usually connects to the Internet through a modem.

Using a built-in device called a Network Address Translator NAT , the router acts as a gatekeeper and passes requests from individual computer users to the Internet. Returning data is delivered back to the public IP address, with the router determining which private IP address requested the information. A public IP address can be static or dynamic. A static IP address does not change, and is used primarily for hosting websites or services on the Internet.

In case you are far away from your computer and need to access it, the public IP address of your router is required.

You can use remote access software such as AnyDesk and TeamViewer for this. You will find your public IP address from the router administration page. So, any address falling between these ranges are private IP addresses. Other are public IP addresses. To find out your private IP, you have to type ipconfig on the command line. If you are looking to set up a small network at home or a small office, private IP addresses will be useful.

On the other hand, if they want to set up a network of broader coverage, public IP addresses will come in handy. Register Login.
