In , after 16 years running Billabong North America, he launched his own brand, Hurley International. The brand at the time was edgy — more punk rock than what the rest of the industry was putting out — with a focus on music and art, creating one of the first lifestyle brands in the surf world. In a interview, Hurley said he sold the company to Nike, in part, to avoid going public as the brand grew. Two other brands — Quiksilver and Billabong — went that route and faced bankruptcy through the years.

On their way, a large bird swooped over the group, shrieking a call that sounded like "Hurley! Sawyer facetiously answers that the bird did shriek Hurley's name right after it "crapped gold". Once they reached a capsule dump most likely coming from the Pearl , which Locke and Mr. Eko previously discovered , the four survivors were attacked by the Others. They were taken to Pala Ferry , where the four survivors were exchanged for Walt , who re-united with Michael, his former friends looking on gagged and bound , stunned at their so-called friend, Michael's, actions.
The father and son left the Island with the Others' boat while Hurley was freed by the mysterious Ms. Klugh who told him he must make his way back to his camp and tell his people they must never come to the other side of the Island. Hurley hesitated, but Jack nodded, telling him to go. He left the Pala Ferry landing knowing that bearing was the only way off the Island. Hurley updates Desmond on the recent events. As Hurley hiked back to the beach camp after being released by the Others at the dock , he came across Locke and Charlie , who were looking for Eko.
He told them what happened, including that Henry was actually their leader. They warned Hurley about the polar bear that chased them, and sent him back to camp. Hurley later came across a naked Desmond , running through the forest. Hurley, along with Charlie, became the first people to realize Desmond could predict the future when Desmond mentioned a speech by Locke that had not yet occurred.
Hurley claims that Desmond can see the future. Hurley and Charlie decided to go through Sawyer's stash , looking for food and whatever else they can find. Suddenly, Desmond approached them and asked if they could go with him. The trio traveled into the jungle, where Locke and Sayid were waiting.
While Locke explained what happened to Mr. Eko , Hurley noticed that Desmond was acting weirdly. When he asked the rest of them what is wrong with him, Desmond ran off toward the beach. The rest of the group ran after him, and when they reached the beach, they saw Desmond swimming out to rescue Claire , who had been out swimming and had lost consciousness.
Desmond brought her back to shore, and revived here with CPR. Charlie inquired how Desmond knew she was drowning, and Hurley replied that he believes Desmond can see the future. Later that day, Hurley asked Locke , who was busy fishing, if he received super powers after the Swan 's implosion. He revealed to Locke his belief that Desmond can see the future, but Locke ignored him.
Hurley asks for help from his fellow survivors to fix the van. In an attempt to get Desmond to reveal how he knew about Claire, Hurley went with Charlie and tried to get Desmond drunk. Once Desmond was completely drunk, Charlie tried to pry the information out of him. However, a fight ensued between Desmond and Charlie, after Charlie called Desmond a coward, which Hurley was quick to break up. The next day, Hurley revisited Libby's grave , and talked to her about his struggles on the Island, and how much he missed her.
Afterward, Hurley saw Vincent carrying a skeleton's arm with a key in its dead clutches. Vincent sprang into the woods, which prompted Hurley to follow the lab. There in the woods, Hurley discovered an old Volkswagen. He rushed back to camp , and told everyone about his new find.
Nobody wanted to help him fix the car , except Jin , who did not understand Hurley's words. Hurley finally understands that he can make his own luck. Suddenly, they were joined by Sawyer , who made his way back from the Hydra Island with Kate.
He demanded to know where his stuff was, but his anger disappeared with Hurley's hug. Together, the trio lifted the van up, and started to look for a way to re-activate it. Hurley enlisted Charlie 's help, trying to spark some hope in him. They decided to roll the van down a hill, which ended with large black rocks.
Charlie decided to join him, testing his fate. Right before hitting the rocks, Hurley remembered his father's sayings, that he creates his own fate.
The van came back to life, and the four of them were riding the van. After they left, Hurley stayed in the van for awhile, thinking about the fact that the Numbers ' curse might have been lifted from him. Hurley battles Sawyer in a ping-pong match for various stakes. The next day, the survivors found the ping-pong table that was blown out of the Swan after the discharge. They decided to play, but could not find the ball. Sawyer, who found the ball, decided to win back his stash in a ping pong game against Hurley - but Sawyer is defeated and must give up using nicknames for a week.
Hurley, who used to play ping-pong everyday at his mother's house, won the game. He returned Sawyer's porn stash, telling Sawyer not to worry about Kate, who was safe with Locke and Sayid. He played ping-pong with Sawyer when Nikki staggered out of the jungle, collapsed in front of them and apparently died. Misinterpreting her final words as "Paulo lies," they sought Paulo and found him also apparently dead.
Hurley treated things as a murder investigation after that, trying to figure out what happened and interrogated Desmond who revealed that Nikki and Sawyer had argued. Questioning Sawyer, he learned that Nikki had tried to get a gun from him but failed. He said the eulogy over their bodies and he and Sawyer buried them, not noticing that Nikki, having only been paralyzed by spider venom, had revived. Hurley is sent by the survivors to supervise Juliet.
After burying Nikki and Paulo, Hurley warned Sawyer that his attitude was leading to a vote of banishment the following day. Hurley told Sawyer he should try to make amends for his past actions. While reluctant at first, Sawyer eventually agreed, performing good deeds and earning the gratitude of most of the camp.
However, Hurley's claim of a banishment vote was simply a con, designed to force Sawyer into taking a leadership role as Jack , Sayid , Kate and Locke were all away from camp and people were looking at him to fill it " Left Behind ". After Juliet arrived at the beach camp, Hurley was sent to talk to her, so he could keep an eye on her. He asked why she wasn't there when he, Jack, Kate, and Sawyer were kidnapped , and talked to her about Ethan 's previous infiltration of the camp, ominously pointing out to Juliet the spot where they buried his body.
Hurley hears from Naomi that there were no survivors of Flight Following a vision of Desmond's, Hurley accompanied him, Charlie and Jin on a trip into the jungle, having convinced Jin to come along. During the trip, they heard and saw a helicopter go down in the jungle. When daylight came, they searched for it.
During an argument between Hurley and Charlie over Superman and Flash, Charlie was almost killed by an arrow trap. Hurley watched over Naomi , the ejected pilot of the helicopter, after Mikhail Bakunin mysteriously appeared to tend to her wounds. She regained consciousness, and Hurley told her they were the survivors of Oceanic Flight , and started to ask if she was there to rescue them.
He was shocked at Naomi's response, that it was not possible for them to be the survivors of Oceanic because the plane had been found and, "There were no survivors.
They were all dead. Charlie hugs Hurley for the final time. Hurley was seen with Jin while Sawyer went to the bathroom. The next day, Hurley told Sayid about Naomi. Later, Kate found Hurley and Sayid attempting to fix the satellite phone. The next day, Hurley was on the beach and yelled to Sayid when he saw Karl running up the beach.
Soon after, Hurley saw Charlie and Desmond leaving on the boat to travel to the Looking Glass station. Hurley wanted to go, but Charlie told him he was too fat and wouldn't fit on the boat.
Charlie hugged Hurley, and the boat departed. As camp was getting ready to leave, Hurley offered to help Claire with Aaron. Sawyer orders Hurley to stay in the van , seconds after killing Pryce. Claire and Hurley walked away together. Hurley left with the rest of the camp, but when they only heard two explosions instead of the expected three, he tried to join Sawyer and Juliet who were returning to camp to find out the situation.
However, while he was willing to kill the Others to save his friends, he did not approve of Sawyer murdering Tom after he had surrendered. Hurley learns of Charlie's death. Immediately after the rescue of Sayid , Jin , and Bernard , Hurley used a captured walkie-talkie to warn the remaining Others to stay away from their beach. Instead, he reached Jack on Ben 's walkie-talkie. Hurley was overjoyed when Jack informed him, over the radio, that the ship had been contacted and a rescue party was on the way.
With Bernard 's encouragement, he did a "cannonball" into the ocean. When he surfaced, he saw Desmond returning, and immediately noticed Charlie 's absence. He tried to find out what happened, but everyone was busy arguing about whether to call and warn Jack about the freighter, causing Hurley to shout, "Where's Charlie?! Sawyer wanted to call and warn Jack, but Sayid was convinced that their transmissions were being monitored.
When Sawyer was about to call anyway, Hurley grabbed the walkie and threw it into the water. He then said that they'd better get going, and he the rest of the group armed themselves and headed into the jungle to find Jack and everyone else.
Hurley delivers the news of Charlie's death to Claire. After rebuffing Sawyer's attempt to talk about Charlie's death, Hurley fell behind the group and got lost. He heard strange noises and whispers , then saw a cabin in the woods. He carefully approached and looked inside, seeing the darkened figure of a man in a rocking chair.
Suddenly, an eye appeared in the window, causing Hurley to shout and run away. But after running some distance, he saw the cabin in front of him again. The cabin door creaked open. He closed his eyes and told himself that what he was seeing was not real, and when he opened his eyes, the cabin was gone. He tripped and fell on his back, and was surprised to look up and see Locke standing over him.
Hurley and Locke discussed Charlie's message, and they agreed that calling the boat was a mistake. They headed off to find the rest of the group again, believing that they had to warn the others as soon as possible. After finding them, it was Hurley who informs Claire of Charlie's death.
They hugged and cried, and Hurley tearfully said, "He was trying to help us. Hurley chooses to follow Locke instead of Jack. When Jack declared that nobody would accompany Locke because he was "crazy," Hurley was the first to support Locke. He gave a speech about Charlie, saying that he went to the Looking Glass to help the group, and he was successful, but then something caused him to change his mind. Crying, he points out that the last thing Charlie did was to warn them about the people on the boat.
Hurley announced that he would listen to Charlie, and went with Locke to the Barracks. Several others, including Claire , followed his lead. When Locke announced that the group had to stop at a cabin before continuing to the barracks, Hurley, sounding confused, said that the cabin was in the other direction. When Locke and Ben gave him confused looks thinking that he shouldn't have seen the cabin , Hurley awkwardly said that he meant the plane's cabin.
He was present when the group finds Charlotte and when Ben revealed the information he knew about her. Hurley pretends to be abandoned by Locke and his followers. Hurley initially disagreed with Locke about his decision to keep Charlotte hostage; however, he participated in a ruse to capture the members of Jack's group trying to rescue Charlotte. Hurley hid in a closet in one of the barracks houses, yelling for help. When he was discovered by Sayid, Kate, and Miles, he told them that Locke had abandoned him.
But, this was not true. After Hurley won their trust , Sawyer and Locke were able to find everyone else. Hurley apologizes for the deception and reveals that he is still a member of Locke's group. As Hurley was carrying food to Miles in the boathouse, Kate offered to do it instead. Hurley was thankful, but accidentally slipped Miles' location to Kate. Kate promised not to tell, and went to the boathouse. Hurley was later seen living with Sawyer, watching movies on the television.
Hurley decides to join Locke , but promises Sawyer he will return. He picked up Aaron and hid in Ben's house with everyone. He was the first to notice that Claire's house was blown up and placed Aaron in a safe, makeshift crib. Once Sawyer arrived back with a disorientated Claire, Ben denied Hurley to open the door for them. However, Hurley broke the window to let Sawyer and Claire in, even with Ben urging him not to. Later, Hurley followed Ben's instructions and fled the house, with everyone else.
When they went outside and saw the Monster, he asked "Did you call that thing? Once Ben caught up to them, Locke and Sawyer argued over who was keeping Hurley when Sawyer decided he was going back to Jack and the beach. Hurley convinced them to stop arguing and went with Locke and Benjamin to find Jacob, and promised Sawyer he will return. Hurley, Locke , and Ben argue on the right route for Jacob's cabin.
Following Ben and Locke through the jungle, Hurley began asking questions about the cabin, eventually asking Ben how much longer it would take to reach the cabin. However, Ben stated that since Hurley was the last one who had seen the cabin, he was following Hurley. Hurley was less than happy about this, and when settling down to camp, expressed fear on what would happen when the mercenary team returned.
The next morning, Hurley hypothesized that the reason Locke, Ben, and himself could see the cabin was they were the "craziest. While Locke rummaged in the mass grave, searching for Horace 's corpse, Hurley questioned Ben about his actions in the Purge.
Ben denied that the purge was his decision. After Locke returned, he apologized to Hurley for bringing him along, and offered him a chance to return to the beach camp. Hurley refused, and as soon as he was out of earshot, Ben congratulated John for his manipulative skills. Upon reaching the cabin, Locke continued in alone while Ben and Hurley waited outside. During the awkward time spent waiting, Hurley offered half of an Apollo Bar to Ben, who accepted.
Upon Locke's emergence from the cabin, Locke told them that they needed to move the Island. Hurley and Locke look on as Ben surrenders himself to Keamy.
The three then continued on from the cabin to the Orchid. Ben then removed a hidden case from behind some rocks containing several items, including crackers, which Locke threw to Hurley. Hurley began to eat them before being informed by Ben that they were fifteen years old.
Hurley realized that moving the Island would also move the mercenaries hunting them, a fact Ben stated that he was "working on. They then reached the Orchid, and Hurley and Locke watched helplessly as Ben surrendered himself to Keamy and the other mercenaries. Hurley met Jack and Sawyer as they arrived on the Orchid 's greenhouse and was glad that Sawyer came back for him. He was a little awkward to see Jack.
They caught up with Locke and Hurley told Jack not to go to the helicopter right away, as Keamy and his men were taking Ben there. Hurley thanked Sawyer for coming back for him and asked if Claire and Aaron were fine, getting no answer from Sawyer.
They both left with Jack and headed to the helicopter.
